My holiday snaps

In a small area of old Zagreb they use street gas lamps. Someone has to light them every evening and extinguish them in the morning.

I think they want us to go left!
Chad: You are extremely observant Ray.
Ce lampadaire est très beau.
Chad: I agree.
I suppose it keeps someone in work, and probably looks charming.
Chad: Better than paying them dole money.
Well isn't that charming! And it keeps someone employed...
**** I wrote that before I read Frank's comment.... great minds, I guess! smile
Chad: Your minds are wired in parallel.

There can't be many gas lighter uppers left these days Chad
Chad: It must be dull at one of their union meetings Tiff.

They have still their charm. In Berlin there are also gas lamps.
Chad: Really! I did not know.

I guess when we were kids there were still loads of gas lights here too.
Chad: Crumbs, that makes me feel old Bill. Don’t say a word!

There is even one left in Bath, Chad - but it is not functional, sadly
Chad: That’s a shame, it would be a great tourist attraction.

I think that this could an ideal job for a gas lamp lighter. They have gas lights in Malvern; I assumed they were automatically controlled somehow.
Chad: You can’t beat having a bloke with a ladder and a box of matches.
That is a crazy scene above to my eyes.
Chad: It’s a tourist attraction though.
There's probably aged lamplighter smile
Chad: Not allowed to retire.

My Southampton, grandparents had gas lighting well into the fifties
Chad: And I knew an elderly couple who ran a very small petrol station with a hand operated pump. They had gas lighting too.
