Ah...first times...when we were young...

[I digress...]

The tShirt is a lovely object of connection of Aus to Cub, Chad.
gutteridge: It is isn't it Ray, I'm glad you spotted it.
Now if you'd had a Mexican Mocha Latte with your Australia T-shirt in Cuba... all the dots would be connected! smile
gutteridge: I only drink black coffee Elizabeth, so that dot will remain unconnected.

Is this because they grow a lot of sugar cane or because socialism has reduced the country to abject poverty Chad?
gutteridge: I'm not sure Tiff. But as we are in a farming area, I suspect it's cheaper than buying refined sugar.
That would definitely be a memory, Chad!
gutteridge: It might be my only time Ginnie. I don't take sugar in coffee but enjoyed chewing on this stick.

I hope that you chewed the sugar cane the rest of the day. What a memory to keep. Love it.
gutteridge: It was an experience I could well have never enjoyed Astrid. It is quite pleasant to chew on this cane.

Do you get your stick of sugar cane out each time you go for another cuppa?
gutteridge: As I don't take sugar in coffee I simply enjoyed this for the novelty.

white is the dominant 'colour' here - Is the stick fragile?
gutteridge: No, probably like angelica in texture.
Almost makes you want to have sugar in your coffee.

I am pleased you saw sense or I would have had to build a wall around your house and made you pay for it...unless it was a solar wall, in which case it would pay for itself
gutteridge: Ha ha you are on form today Bill.

Very different. Would this be better for you (or less bad..) than having refines sugar?
gutteridge: I would imagine it would be better, but marginally.
Une bonne première fois....
gutteridge: There's a first time for everything.

Ah, so you finally stumbled onto Australia. An uncle of mine had a dairy farm surrounded by sugar can fields in the Durban area. He fed sugar cane tops and treacle (by-product of sugar manufacturing) to the cows. The cane farmers didn't mind us cutting a cane (when ready), which we peeled and divided amongst our kiddie selves. Also, on occasion, we dipped a finger in the treacle, to suck on.

Another thing was the fresh fruit. This was in the days before manipulation. Mangoes, small sweet pineapples avocados and bananas were there, baskets full and anyone could take as much as (s)he wanted. Nowadays, producers want all fruit to be bigger and available all year round - hence the manipulation. The result is just not as nice as the originals.
gutteridge: I am envious of all these fresh and exotic things you have enjoyed Louis. In England it is hard to get really fresh stuff and we realise the difference when we go to exotic countries.
Sugar cane is a nice idea, does one chew it, dissolve it in the coffee or is it optional?
gutteridge: It chew and suck on it Brian. The sweetness is not as intense as refined sugar.
I did chew on sugar cane in Cuba and saw their fields burning at night when arriving by air (not Chadair). It scared me to see large areas of fire until I heard what was happening.
gutteridge: Interesting, I presume they were burning the stumble after the harvest.
